Digital Britain Report Proposes Mobile Broadband for the Tube

Published recently, the Digital Britain report wants to change the face of broadband in the UK. The report envisions making the country a leader in digital communications by making fast internet available to every traveller across the country. An important suggestion included in the report in this regard is to ensure availability of mobile internet in the London Underground tube trains as well.

The idea is not very new and had been discussed quite a few times but never brought into effect. Currently the availability of the internet in Tube trains is not good as the connection is often lost and there is inconsistent connectivity on the main lines - click for more on dongle broadband.

In March 2009 too, the government had planned to give access to the internet in London’s Tube but stepped back as it thought that the ongoing financial difficulties would cause problems in providing funding support to the initiative.

The latest suggestions have been made in order to make sure that the UK can play a good host for the 2012 Olympic Games, which are being touted as the most digitalized Olympic Games ever. The intention is to make Britain fully connected to the internet by the time the Olympics start. The government, which earlier was hesitant about the initiative, is now looking forward to private sector broadband players to step up.
