Vietnam’s Badminton Star Avails of New Coach

Nguyen Tien Minh, Vietnam’s number one badminton player, has reportedly availed of the services of a new coach. The partnership is said to start early next year.

According to reports, the world number seven will be getting training advice from Indonesian badminton coach Asep Shuharno in terms of proper executions using the badminton racquet among others. This development was revealed by Ho Chi Minh City Municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism late last week.

Shuharno is a known coach who has assisted world badminton champions such as Simon Santos, Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Tufik Hydayat. He’s currently training the Singaporean team for the past three years.

Tien Minh made headlines early this month when he successfully defended the Yonex Sunrise Vietnam Open Grand Prix men’s singles title to the delight of the home crowd.

During the aforementioned tournament, the world number seven defeated 58th-ranked Chong Wei Feng in a marathon three-set final held at Phan Dinh Phung Sports Center in the Vietnamese capital of Ho Chi Minh City.

The victory earned Minh $3,500 plus additional $1,400 from his sponsors for her impressive performance. The tournament had a prize pool of $50,000 and attracted 200 players from over 14 countries.
The details of the new partnership between Minh and Shuharno are yet to be made public. Minh is concentrating on winning upcoming tournaments to improve his world ranking.
